This is Hieronymus Bosch’s Christ Carrying the Cross.
What made me stop at this
painting were all of the strange faces. i found out that Christ is surrounded by men with faces
that look like beast and monsters because these are the men that have lost all
human feeling and knowledge. The other
faces are symbols of greed, corruption of the human spirit, and the wealthy.
Bosch chose to show the faces this way
to reveal how the real faces behind all the greed, and corruptions. The
composition of this piece is interesting, Its full of stacked heads of
different expressions with no space to see a background. I think this painting is like a good vs
evil, because all the these evil sprites have surrounded Christ’s gentle easy
calm face expression. Im not sure if
this is mannerstic because the figures are not really oddly shaped but they do
take up space and there is no hint as to where this could have taken place. I
love all the detail in the piece i can easily tell that the painting is oil.
Even though the figures all over the place each one has their own space that
clearly shows the expression.

This piece is a little strange. The cramped space reminds me of the way Carracci typically has very complicated composition. The faces sort of look like a little troll-like. As usual, Jesus is center on the canvas.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree but I'm getting another message that's telling me to live by faith and not by sight despite our circumstances and situations that may occur in our likes.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think this, Maurice?
DeleteWhat an interesting piece. It does not surprise me that this is painted by Bosch. He has a very unique style. Although none of the coloring or open space is similar to The Garden of Earthly Delights, he has a bizarre way of interpreting Scripture and Biblical accounts.
